Welcome to UDA Online!

     UDA Online is the public site for news and information related to the Urologic Diseases in America (UDA) Project, which is sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health. The goal of UDA is to increase general understanding of the burden of urologic diseases in both human and financial terms.
     Among its accomplishments, the UDA Project has created a comprehensive omnibus of information comprising the UDA Compendium. The Compendium synthesizes information from myriad national and regional sources across the public and private sectors to report on risk factors, treatment types, prevalence, and utilization trends for urologic diseases affecting men, women and children in the United States.      UDA also supports collaborative research projects designed by young investigators in urologic health services research. These collaborative analyses have yielded a rich volume of published research that examines and expands on topics from the Compendium. A list of current collaborations is available by clicking here. 2015 UDA Webinar
We regret to inform you that the 2nd UDA Webinar has been cancelled by the NIDDK. The principal purpose of the webinar was to acquaint potential UDA Collaborators with available data and analytic resources and to announce the fourth Request for Individual Research Proposals (RIRP). Based on the success of previous RIRPs, the NIDDK has decided that it will create a new K-Award type grant to fund new investigators in the area of urologic research. We encourage you to monitor Grants.gov and the NIDDK website for this new award mechanism, which is expected to be announced sometime in 2016.

Request for Individual Research Proposals
In order to expand interest in data marshaled by the Urologic Diseases in America (UDA) project, this call for research proposals will support individual, manuscript-driven analyses of UDA datasets and provide support for the development and execution of these projects. We are especially interested in urologic conditions that have received meager study to date (e.g., pediatric urologic conditions), and studies in comparative effectiveness. Successful applicants will be designated as UDA collaborators and will receive analytic support from the UDA team to refine their hypothesis, develop their analytic methods, conduct their analyses (programming performed by RAND), interpret their findings, and provide feedback on their resulting manuscripts and abstracts.

Junior investigators (Assistant and Associate Professors) and fellows are encouraged to apply. Fellows must identify a local mentor. Priority will be given to applicants with a demonstrated commitment to carrying their projects through to fruition as peer-reviewed manuscripts.

UDA in the News
Findings from a recent UDA-driven publication have been highlighted in various news sources including USA today, Business Week, U.S. News and World Report, and the San Gabriel Tribune. The article, "Earlier hospice care urged for terminal prostate cancer," highlights the importance of published findings by UDA investigators on the subject of health outcomes. The article has since been picked up by other news sites including medicinenet, and healthfinder.

A UDA-driven publication was featured in Urology Times. The article, "Shock wave lithotripsy use for kidney stones higher than ureteroscopy despite retreatment rate" discusses treatment use and quality of care for patients with kidney stones.

Another UDA publication was featured in several news sources, including CBS news, Newsday, and Medical News Today. Findings from a UDA study showing that most high grade, noninvasive bladder cancer patients were not getting care according to guidelines developed by the American Urological Association and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network were highlighted in several articles, one of which may be found here.

You may have seen UDA in the news when a project by one of our collaborators was featured on many local news broadcasts, local and national newspapers, and online news sites. The study, Prevalence of kidney stones in the United States, highlighted a near doubling of the prevalence of kidney stones in the US since 1994, paralleling the increase in obesity. UDA Collaborator Chuck Scales and NIDDK Director of Clinical Research in Urologic Diseases Ziya Kirkali comment on the story here.
